selfish...

Have you ever come across people who are damn selfish? Like they will not teach you anything?? I think most of cases, these peoples are from the Chinese ed. Not that I am critising the Chinese education, but the brought up in a Chinese environments makes everything seems so competitive that Chinese eds (CED) often feel the need to protect themselves…

My first encountour with such inklings were when I transferred from a private school to a government Chinese school. I can feel the total change of environment over here… back in my old school, all of us are students, we learn, we teach, we share, basically, we are not afraid to let our class/school mates to know what we know, cause in this sense we are all learning… we increase our knowledge, we widen our views and we shape up our characters… what I know you might not know and what I do not know, you might know.. it is always a win-win situation if we share… However, when I got transferred, (I got transferred to a govt school from a private school is because the govt school is nearer to my house, and not that I am facing financial difficulties as claimed by someone’s mother… hehe however I know she is of good cause..) the surrounding changed drastically… ppl in the class do not share anything… they keep everything to themselves.. I was shocked by the change of culture… and then I discussed the matter with another friend of mine in the govt school, at least she did give me a good reason why these ppl acted this way…she said that, some of these ppl, come from poor family, so in order to further their studies, they need to be the best in order to get scholarship… hence they are damn reluctant to share their knowledge.. I was taken back a little bit, but then I think it was a good reason..

HOWEVER, when I join the working world, (yes yes time lass so fast that I am so old already) at least the first few co I joined the ppl there are willing to share their knowledge (even though some doesn’t have much knowledge and lead me to do stupid work…) but at least they are not the selfish bunch… BUT recently I joined a company… the ppl in my dept are like so damn CB! (actually not all, only 1 or 2 nia)

Here is the story:-

On my first day with nothing to do, I decided to open a file to read the documents, I’ve been told that, “that is my file..” implying that I should not touch her file, I am not allowed to see her file…

Then, later on…

On one Friday, at 6.05pm, “errrr, winnie, you do this budget for me, you just refer the last year’s budget and amend the figures accordingly…” AT 6.05PM!!! that is after office hours… okay, fine….

Then, another Friday, I happily told ce that we are going to watch movie that day… at 5something, “Winnie, you do this for me, then you insert the figures into this spreadsheet.. it’s for the budget.. after you do the spread sheet, then you update the slides as well…” and then I was late for my movie and poor ting has to wait for me…

Okay fine… then…

Our accounts closing is on the 10th.. while helping someone to do the budget and while waiting for the PIC to pass me the accounts, she requested me to help her in doing the consol budget…. And I do and do until no time to close my accounts, she somemore pass more of HER accounts for me to close… WTF…. It’s not like I was surfing the net or what.. I am still doing my work… okay, I help her close, help her tie her balances, help her to liase with others on billing and all… yes I finished the accounts…

Then another one day
Early morning I have tons of work to do, she ask me to help her close her accounts… and guess what she was doing that whole morning? She was posting photos online to sell her items… WTF… ownself so free also don’t want to do the work…

Furthermore, if there is something that u don’t know, they (there are 2) wont teach you… cause that is spoon feeding u, so u go and “chong pek” (hit wall) and chong pek and chong pek until u find out yourself… haiz…

This is the culture now… is it me? Or is it the culture? I don’t know
